Boycott Comments on Kohli and Sharma’s Athleticism and Test Retirement
Former England batting legend Geoffrey Boycott has shared his views on the shift in Indian Test cricket, drawing a comparison between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma regarding their departure from the format.
In a column for a British publication, Boycott suggested that while both cricketers have established significant legacies, Kohli’s absence will present a more substantial challenge for India, particularly in series against England.
He appreciated Rohit’s stylish batting and leadership qualities but observed that the opening batsman’s recent struggles with form and physical fitness made his decision to retire more logical and less impactful on India’s prospects.
Boycott stated, “Rohit was never as naturally athletic as Kohli, and he understands that opening the batting in England can be exceptionally demanding due to the ball’s movement early on.”
“To succeed, one must be fully prepared for the challenge. I believe that the combined pressure of opening the innings and captaining across all three formats eventually took a toll on him.”
Conversely, Boycott implied that Kohli might have experienced mental exhaustion after consistently shouldering India’s batting responsibilities with minimal rest amid a busy international schedule.
“Given India’s extensive international cricket commitments and limited downtime, mental fatigue is inevitable.
It is immaterial how much talent or experience you possess; if you lack mental freshness and enthusiasm for the challenge, it becomes draining,” he added.
Kohli’s retirement occurred shortly after Rohit’s decision to retire from Test cricket, signifying the conclusion of a defining period for India in this format. For the first time in over ten years, India will field a Test XI without either of these key players.
Shubman Gill has assumed the role of India’s new Test captain, with Rishabh Pant as his deputy, as the team gears up for a challenging series in English conditions under new leadership.
Notably, the five-match Test series between England and India is scheduled to commence at Headingley, Leeds, on June 20. The remaining matches are set to be held at Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval.
