Vaughan Laments Stokes’ Absence After England’s Test Defeat
LONDON: Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, voiced his dismay on Tuesday following England’s loss in the fifth Test against India. He noted that the absence of Ben Stokes significantly hampered the team, suggesting the outcome might have favored England had Stokes participated.
Stokes was sidelined for the decisive match due to a right shoulder injury, which led to Ollie Pope stepping in as captain.
Despite entering the final day as the presumed frontrunners, England experienced a sudden collapse, concluding just 35 runs shy of their objective with four wickets in reserve at the start of the day.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Vaughan reflected on the defeat and emphasized the importance of Stokes, not only for his all-around capabilities but also for his leadership, which brings a sense of calm and assurance to the squad.
“Had Ben Stokes been part of the team this morning, England would have secured victory in this Test match. His influence on this team and its mindset is substantial. England experienced panic this morning, needing only one solid partnership,” Vaughan commented.
Vaughan further noted that the team failed to implement their typically aggressive strategy under pressure.
“Their aggressive style of play, which usually serves them well, ultimately led to their downfall this time around,” he remarked.
Before his injury, Stokes had a noteworthy series. He bowled 140 overs across four Tests, securing 17 wickets at an average of 25.24.
He also contributed 304 runs in seven innings with the bat, averaging 43.43, underscoring his crucial role within the team.
