Bouchard Advances at Canadian Open, Raducanu Also Wins

MONTREAL: In the Canadian Open’s first round, former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard of Canada triumphed over Emiliana Arango of Colombia with scores of 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. The match took place on Monday at Centre Court.

Bouchard, who earlier in August hinted at retirement, mentioned she might reconsider if she gave an unforgettable performance on her home ground.

“If I win this tournament, I will not retire,” Bouchard stated.

Making only her second singles appearance this year, Bouchard began powerfully, securing the first set. Arango countered with an assertive performance in the second, drawing the match. Nevertheless, Bouchard took command in the third set and clinched the match with a dominant victory.

With this win, Bouchard proceeds to the second round to compete against 17th seed Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.

In another match, Emma Raducanu from Britain also advanced, overcoming Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania 6-2, 6-4. Raducanu is slated to meet 32nd seed Peyton Stearns in the subsequent round.

“It’s always challenging when facing a close friend,” Raducanu commented.

“I’m very pleased that I managed to set that aside for the match and build upon a successful week in D.C.”

Meanwhile, several prominent figures, including world number ones Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner, along with Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Jack Draper, have opted out of the WTA 1000 event.
