Baker Set to Lead Attack as Archer Returns to ODI Cricket
LEEDS: In a confirmed announcement, England’s cricket team has revealed that Sonny Baker, an uncapped fast bowler, is set to make his debut on the international stage in the initial One Day International (ODI) against South Africa. The match is scheduled for Tuesday at Headingley.
The 22-year-old Hampshire bowler, despite participating in only 11 List A matches, gained considerable attention during this year’s Hundred tournament, where he successfully took nine wickets across seven appearances while playing for Manchester Originals.
Known for his ability to consistently bowl at speeds of 90mph (145kph), Baker also impressed with his performances for England Lions during the winter season.
He is expected to spearhead the fast bowling unit together with Jofra Archer—who is making a comeback to ODIs for the first time since the Champions Trophy—and Brydon Carse.
Harry Brook is slated to captain the team in what will only be his second series as leader, while the opening batting partnership will feature Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett.
In his comments prior to the match, Brook lauded Baker’s quick ascent and fearless approach to bowling during The Hundred, especially against some of cricket’s most prominent batsmen.
“He’s been fantastic in the Hundred,” Brook commented.
“We’ve watched him bowl to some of the best batters globally—Williamson, Warner, Smith, Bairstow—and he dominated them. He bowls with significant pace, achieves swing in both directions, and demonstrates exceptional skills in death bowling. It’s exciting to have him opening tomorrow, and many are eager to observe his future progress,” he further stated.
Brook also mentioned that Baker’s impressive performances have been so remarkable that he might even be considered for Test opportunities in the future.
“I am not involved in selecting the red-ball team, but he has clearly performed exceptionally well this summer. He possesses high speed, excellent skill, and a strong character.”
England Playing XI For First ODI: Jamie Smith, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook (C), Jos Buttler (wk), Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Sonny Baker.
