Djokovic Eyes 100th ATP Title at Madrid Open 2025
MADRID: Tennis icon Novak Djokovic of Serbia offered high praise for his longtime rival Rafael Nadal after the Spanish player was honored as a Laureus Sporting Icon at Tuesday’s event in Madrid.
Nadal is only the second male athlete ever to receive this recognition, the first being MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi.
Djokovic and Nadal have one of tennis’s most well-known rivalries, competing in 59 matches over the years.
Speaking to the media, Djokovic conveyed his deep respect for Nadal’s impact—not just in tennis, but in life.
“Everyone is aware of his greatness on the court—his competitive nature, his strength, and his achievements,” said Djokovic.
“But what’s even more apparent is his persistent attitude, particularly when facing injuries, as well as the principles he embodies. He perfectly deserves this award because his influence goes beyond sports,” he added.
Nadal acknowledged Djokovic’s comments with gratitude on his Instagram story.
“Thank you for your words, Djokovic! It was great seeing you yesterday in Madrid. Best of luck in the tournament and the season!”
Though Nadal will not participate in this year’s Madrid Open, the five-time champion suggested that Carlos Alcaraz, the 2023 champion, should be seen as the favorite over Djokovic.
“Well, if Carlos is fit, I think he’s always the favourite,” Nadal stated.
Djokovic, a three-time Madrid Open champion, is participating in the 2025 competition in pursuit of his 100th ATP title.
