Diamondbacks Secure Victory Over Giants in Series Opener
PHOENIX: Alek Thomas contributed three hits and two runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Francisco Giants 4-2 at Chase Field on Monday, marking the beginning of their four-game series.
Ryne Nelson delivered a strong performance, pitching six and two-thirds innings, recording seven strikeouts and allowing only two earned runs on five hits, without issuing any walks.
The Diamondbacks swiftly countered after Tyler Fitzgerald’s two-run double had leveled the score in the seventh inning.
Thomas and Jose Herrera combined effectively, hitting consecutive singles that paved the way for Geraldo Perdomo’s RBI single, putting Arizona ahead with a 3-2 advantage.
Earlier, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. initiated the scoring with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Giants’ pitcher Logan Webb conceded three runs on seven hits over six and one-third innings.
The game almost saw a tie in the eighth when Christian Koss hit a deep ball to left-center, but a replay review determined it to be a ground-rule double rather than a home run.
Reliever John Curtiss secured two crucial outs to claim the victory, while Shelby Miller pitched the final four outs, striking out two, to earn his tenth save and his first career four-out save.
Eugenio Suarez provided an additional run with his 26th home run in the eighth inning, helping the D-backs end their four-game losing streak. Arizona’s pitchers limited San Francisco’s top three batters to just one hit in twelve at-bats, with seven strikeouts.
Giants’ manager Bob Melvin was ejected in the ninth inning due to disagreements over ball and strike calls.
Arizona is scheduled to send Zac Gallen to the pitcher’s mound. San Francisco will respond with Hayden Birdsong, despite Gallen’s impressive 0.75 ERA, he has suffered defeats in his previous two starts.
