Cubs Secure Victory Over Brewers in Doubleheader Opener

The Chicago Cubs triumphed over the Milwaukee Brewers with a 6-4 win in the first game of Tuesday’s day-night doubleheader, marking their third victory in the last four games. Rookie Owen Caissie made a significant impact, hitting his first major league home run and contributing three RBIs.

In the ninth inning, with Milwaukee trailing by two, Sal Frelick drew a walk, and Caleb Durbin singled against Cubs’ closer Daniel Palencia. However, William Contreras grounded into a double play, securing Palencia’s 17th save of the season.

Matthew Boyd (12-6) pitched five and one-third innings for Chicago, allowing four runs on six hits, with three strikeouts and three walks. Chad Patrick (3-8) took the loss for the Brewers, surrendering five runs (three earned) on five hits, while striking out four and walking two. Milwaukee’s loss comes after their franchise-best 14-game winning streak. Frelick went two-for-four with two RBIs for Milwaukee, who still lead the National League Central by eight games over the Cubs.

After Ian Happ doubled in the first inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch, Seiya Suzuki walked. Happ was then tagged out at home on Pete Crow-Armstrong’s grounder. A throwing error by Milwaukee’s first baseman, Andrew Vaughn, allowed Caissie to drive in two runs with a single to right field.

In the third, Suzuki walked, and Crow-Armstrong doubled, setting the stage for Willi Castro’s three-run homer, his 11th of the season and first since joining the Cubs, extending their lead to 5-0.

Christian Yelich’s 26th homer of the year put the Brewers on the board in the fourth. Frelick added another run with an RBI single in the fifth, narrowing the gap.

Vaughn doubled to start the sixth, and Brice Turang drove him in with a single, ending Boyd’s outing. Brad Keller relieved Boyd, striking out Blake Perkins, walking Joey Ortiz, and then allowing Frelick’s RBI single, reducing the Brewers’ deficit to 5-4.

Shelby Miller replaced Patrick in the bottom of the sixth and surrendered Caissie’s solo home run to left-center field, solidifying the Cubs’ lead.
