Cubs Set to Clash with Brewers on Saturday
CHICAGO: In a thrilling National League wild-card series conclusion at Wrigley Field on Thursday, Michael Busch propelled the Chicago Cubs to a 3-1 triumph over the San Diego Padres with a solo home run, capping off an impressive three-hit game.
The Cubs initiated the scoring early in the second inning, with Pete Crow-Armstrong contributing an RBI single and Dansby Swanson drawing a bases-loaded walk. Accumulating 13 hits overall, Chicago displayed resilience after their 3-0 defeat on Wednesday.
Busch extended Chicago’s advantage with a powerful home run against Padres closer Robert Suarez in the seventh inning, providing crucial insurance for the team.
Swanson expressed his pride in the team’s performance, acknowledging his contributions both offensively and defensively.
“It reminds me of when I was younger,” Swanson stated. “I have a deep love for this game and the competition it brings. I value my teammates. This is an exceptional group of individuals, and I am incredibly honored to be a part of it.”
Jameson Taillon established a strong foundation on the pitcher’s mound with four scoreless innings before the bullpen took over.
Daniel Palencia secured his second victory of the series, and Andrew Kittredge earned the save despite pitching for the third consecutive day. Brad Keller conceded a solo home run to rookie Jackson Merrill in the ninth inning but recovered before Kittredge secured the win.
For San Diego, Yu Darvish faced difficulties, allowing two runs in just 1 2/3 innings. Padres manager Mike Shildt voiced his disappointment over missed opportunities and a pivotal called strike against Xander Bogaerts.
Following the victory, the Cubs have progressed to the National League Division Series, where they will face the Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee, beginning on Saturday.
