Woakes Faces Shoulder Injury During Oval Test Against India

LONDON: English bowler Chris Woakes stated Friday his commitment to achieving complete fitness before the Ashes series. He is choosing rehabilitation as opposed to surgery to expedite his recuperation from a shoulder injury.

Woakes told the British press that he is awaiting diagnostic results, after which he will formulate a strategy to be match-ready for the Ashes series.

“I am waiting for details on the extent of the injury, but I believe the options will be either surgery or a rehabilitation program to strengthen it,” Woakes commented.

“Of course, rehab carries a possibility of recurrence, which might be a risk worth considering.

“Based on information from physiotherapists and specialists, surgery recovery typically takes three to four months, potentially affecting my participation in the Ashes. This complicates matters.

“Rehab might restore strength in about eight weeks, presenting another choice, but I’m still awaiting the full assessment,” he added.

England required 17 runs when Woakes joined Gus Atkinson at the crease. Although he didn’t face any deliveries, he ran four runs. Atkinson was then bowled out, giving India a six-run victory and tying the series at 2-2.

Woakes has been widely lauded for his bravery, but the Warwickshire player maintains it was merely part of his responsibilities.

“I never hesitated about batting. I was always ready, and I’m sure everyone else in the dressing room felt the same,” he remarked.

“The outpouring of support has been overwhelming, but for me, it was business as usual.

“When you get the chance, you act in the team’s best interests. At that moment, it involved collaborating with Gus to try and secure the win.

“Unfortunately, we fell short, but I’m grateful I fought for the team,” he concluded.

The 36-year-old is expecting scan results after a suspected shoulder dislocation on day one of the fifth Test against India at The Oval.

Despite being unable to bowl for the remainder of the Test, Woakes batted at number 11 on the final morning with his left arm in a sling as England sought a series-winning victory.

Notably, the five-match Ashes series between Australia and England will commence on November 21 in Perth. The second Test is set for Brisbane starting December 4, followed by the third Test in Adelaide from December 17.

The fourth Test is scheduled for Melbourne beginning December 26, with the fifth and final Test in Sydney from January 4, 2026.
