Chris Woakes Announces Retirement from International Cricket
Seasoned English all-rounder Chris Woakes declared his departure from international cricket on Monday, effective immediately.
The 36-year-old publicized his choice via his Instagram account, accompanied by a comprehensive statement and the caption, “Pleasure has been all mine! No regrets.”
Woakes, who debuted internationally in January 2011 against Australia, played for England in 62 Test matches, 122 ODIs, and 33 T20Is.
He was also a member of the England teams that triumphed in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2019 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022.
Woakes’s final international match occurred in August of this year during the fifth and final Test of the five-match home series against India, which was affected by a shoulder injury.
In his retirement announcement, Woakes stated that representing England for nearly 15 years was the greatest source of pride in his distinguished career, aside from winning the two World Cups, and he emphasized that it was the appropriate moment to retire from the sport.
“The time has come, and I’ve come to the conclusion that now is the appropriate moment for me to retire from international cricket,” Woakes remarked in a statement.
“Playing for England was a goal I had since I was a youngster daydreaming in the backyard, and I feel incredibly privileged to have realized those ambitions. Representing England, wearing the Three Lions, and sharing the field with teammates over the last 15 years, many of whom have become lifelong friends, are things I will remember with tremendous pride.
“Making my debut in Australia in 2011 feels like yesterday, but time goes by quickly when you’re enjoying yourself. I never imagined it would be possible to lift two World Cups and participate in some incredible Ashes series, and those memories and celebrations with my teammates will live on in my mind forever.”
Woakes expressed gratitude to his family, supporters, coaches, and teammates for their unwavering support throughout his career.
“To my Mum and Dad, my wife Amie, and our girls Laila and Evie, thank you for your unwavering love, support, and sacrifices over the years. Without you, none of this would have been possible. To the fans, especially the Barmy Army, thank you for your enthusiasm, cheers, and faith,” Woakes continued.
“To my coaches, teammates, and everyone behind the scenes, both with England and Warwickshire, your advice and friendship has meant the world,” he concluded.
Chris Woakes confirmed that he will continue participating in county cricket and will investigate additional prospects in franchise T20 leagues across the globe.
“I am excited to continue playing county cricket and look into more franchise opportunities shortly.”
