Chris Gayle Reflects on Difficult Punjab Kings Stint, Cites Disrespect and Mental Strain

Former West Indies opening batsman and captain, Chris Gayle, has voiced his concerns regarding his time with Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), stating he felt a lack of respect and was improperly handled by the franchise.

The 45-year-old indicated that the ordeal was so challenging that he nearly experienced depression.

Gayle mentioned, “My IPL journey concluded prematurely with Punjab. Frankly, I felt undermined at Kings XI Punjab. I didn’t believe I was treated with the respect a seasoned player deserves, especially considering my contributions and the value I brought to the franchise. Instead, I was made to feel insignificant. For the first instance in my career, I sensed myself nearing a state of depression.”

Acquired by Punjab Kings for INR 2 crore in 2018, Gayle participated in 41 matches for the team, amassing 1,339 runs at an average of 36 and a strike rate of 143.

He delivered impactful performances, including a century, but noted that the psychological pressure of the environment overshadowed his on-field achievements.

“Your emotional well-being outweighs financial considerations. I contacted Anil (Kumble) and informed him of my departure. At that moment, we were preparing for the World Cup and confined to a bubble, which was adversely affecting my mental state. Following my final match against Mumbai, I concluded, ‘This is illogical. I’ll only cause further harm to myself by remaining.’

“I became emotional while speaking with Anil because I was genuinely affected. I felt let down by him and the way the franchise was managed. KL Rahul, the captain, even contacted me, urging, ‘Chris, please stay; you’re scheduled to play in the upcoming game.’ However, I simply responded, ‘I wish you success,’ packed my belongings, and left.”

Despite the unfavorable experience, Gayle expressed he might consider a coaching position with Punjab Kings in the future but acknowledged that he still harbors some animosity.

“I was not treated fairly. If they require my services, I am open to it. However, yes, I do hold some resentment. Loyalty is of utmost importance to me,” Gayle stated.

Earlier in the year, Gayle attended the IPL 2025 Final in Ahmedabad, where RCB secured their inaugural title. He was observed celebrating alongside teammates Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.
