Chelsea Secures Jamie Gittens in Multi-Million Dollar Deal
Chelsea Football Club has officially announced the acquisition of English winger Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund. The transfer is valued at approximately USD 75.02 million, with Gittens signing a seven-year contract.
The agreement was finalized in Fort Lauderdale, where both teams are participating in the FIFA Club World Cup and have advanced to the quarter-finals. While the complete contractual paperwork is still in progress, both clubs have reached a fundamental agreement for the transfer.
Gittens’ Journey to Chelsea
Gittens initially joined Borussia Dortmund in 2020, transitioning from Manchester City’s youth academy. His progression was swift, leading to his senior debut in 2022. Over three seasons, he became a key player for Dortmund.
He participated in 107 matches across all competitions, showcasing his speed and playmaking abilities. Gittens also scored 17 goals during his tenure with the Bundesliga team.
Dortmund’s Perspective
Borussia Dortmund’s managing director, Lars Ricken, commented on Gittens’ development, emphasizing his importance to the club’s youth system.
Statement from Lars Ricken:
“Jamie Gittens’s career exemplifies the success of talent development at Borussia. We identified Jamie early, acquired him without a transfer fee, and nurtured him in our youth performance center. He was also given opportunities at the highest level with the first team.”
“Jamie has rewarded the faith shown in him through dedication, performance, and goals,” he added.
Chelsea’s Summer Acquisitions
Gittens represents a significant addition for Chelsea this summer, following the signings of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town and Joao Pedro from Brighton and Hove Albion.
The club aims to strengthen its options on the left wing, especially after declining to make Jadon Sancho’s loan from Manchester United a permanent arrangement.
