Carlos Vela Announces Retirement from Professional Football
Carlos Vela, formerly a forward for Arsenal and Real Sociedad, has formally declared his retirement from professional soccer after an impressive 19-year journey.
The 36-year-old shared the announcement on his social media platform this Tuesday.
Vela’s career began in Arsenal’s youth system, and he achieved his senior debut while on loan with the Spanish club Salamanca. Subsequently, he played 29 Premier League matches for the Gunners before a successful seven-year period with La Liga’s Real Sociedad.
Known for his adaptability, Vela demonstrated excellence as a forward, attacking midfielder, and winger. He represented the Mexican national team in 72 games, securing the CONCACAF Gold Cup on two occasions.
“Throughout my playing days, I’ve gone through many remarkable moments, but the moment has come to officially step away from professional soccer,” Vela stated.
“It has been an honor to have experienced my career with everyone,” he added.
In 2018, Vela became a member of Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC, where he was essential to the team’s achievements.
He was instrumental in LAFC’s triumphs in both the MLS Cup and the U.S. Open Cup. Vela’s remarkable 34 goals in the 2019 season established a new league record, and he still holds the title of the club’s all-time leader in goals, assists, and game appearances.
LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington expressed his admiration for Vela in a sincere statement.
“He has been the core, the team leader, and the symbol of LAFC. Carlos is among the most accomplished players and leaders in our club’s story,” Thorrington remarked.
