Alcaraz Tipped to Outperform Sinner This Season
According to international media reports on Wednesday, former American tennis professional Steve Johnson is predicting that Carlos Alcaraz will outperform Jannik Sinner by the close of the current season.
Sinner and Alcaraz have become the dominant forces in men’s tennis, jointly securing the most recent seven major titles.
Alcaraz triumphed over Sinner in the French Open final this year, while the Italian player succeeded in dethroning the Spaniard to secure his first Wimbledon title.
The 23-year-old Sinner is the defending champion in both Cincinnati and the US Open. Conversely, the 22-year-old Alcaraz was eliminated from both tournaments last year.
Johnson stated his belief that Carlos Alcaraz is poised to conclude the year as the top-ranked player.
“My prediction is that Carlos will end the year in the number one position, especially considering he began with a three-month advantage,” Johnson commented.
“Sinner was absent for four Masters series events, which gives Alcaraz an edge, in my opinion. However, the ultimate outcome hinges on performance in the major tournaments. Winning the Open, for instance, awards 2000 points.”
He further noted that the Wimbledon loss to Jannik Sinner provided Alcaraz with the necessary impetus to improve.
“If either player experiences an early exit, like in the quarter-finals, and the other goes on to win the event, that winner immediately gains a 1500-point lead from that single tournament.”
“Nevertheless, I anticipate Carlos surpassing him by year’s end. I believe his Wimbledon defeat served as a wake-up call, motivating him to elevate his game.”
The current world number two, Alcaraz, has already progressed to the round of 16 at the Cincinnati Open and seems to be in excellent form, demonstrated by his 6-4, 6-4 victory over Hamad Medjedovic of Serbia in the round of 32 on Tuesday.
