Alcaraz Advances to French Open Quarter-Finals

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is advancing in his bid for a second French Open title. He secured a quarter-final berth with a challenging 7-6(8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over American Ben Shelton on Sunday at Court Philippe-Chatrier.

The 21-year-old Spaniard demonstrated resilience, overcoming an initial slow pace and internal struggles to defeat Shelton, who aimed for a significant career win.

“Today, I battled against my own mind,” Alcaraz commented post-match. “I focused on maintaining composure despite feeling frustrated. I am very pleased that I prevented those negative thoughts from overwhelming me and successfully persevered.”

Match Highlights

The match opened with a closely contested first set. Alcaraz couldn’t capitalize on his sole breakpoint chance in the first twelve games but rallied from a 1-4 deficit in the tiebreak. He saved three set points before seizing the set when Shelton’s shot landed in the net.

The second seed faced further strain in a lengthy 12-minute opening game of the second set, where he defended six break points to maintain his serve. Subsequently, Alcaraz took control, employing deep, forceful forehands to induce errors from his American opponent.

Shelton displayed determination in the third set, establishing a 3-1 advantage. Although Alcaraz attempted a comeback, Shelton regained his poise to claim the set, sustaining his hopes.

However, Alcaraz’s steadiness and extensive court coverage proved pivotal in the fourth set. He disrupted Shelton’s rhythm to secure the match and advance to the quarter-finals.

Looking Ahead

Regarding his upcoming quarter-final match against Tommy Paul, Alcaraz recognized the caliber of their previous encounters.

“Each time we compete, we elevate our performance and display excellent tennis,” he stated.

Alcaraz will now concentrate on Paul as he persists in his title defense in Paris.
