Alcaraz Set to Clash with Darderi in US Open Third Round
NEW YORK: Carlos Alcaraz secured his place in the US Open’s third round after a commanding straight-sets victory over Italy’s Mattia Bellucci. The match concluded with scores of 6-1, 6-0, 6-3 at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday.
Alcaraz, the world number two and 2022 US Open champion, immediately took control by breaking Bellucci’s serve twice in the initial set. Displaying both powerful forehands and skillful volleys, Alcaraz made certain to avoid a repeat of his premature exit from last year’s competition.
Alcaraz outperformed Bellucci across all sets, maintaining a clean game to prevent his opponent from gaining any advantage. The crowd responded enthusiastically to Alcaraz’s exceptional performance as he clinched a second-round bagel.
Reflecting on his success, Alcaraz noted that he performed exceptionally from the beginning to the end of the match.
“From the first point to the last, my level was very high,” Alcaraz stated.
“I am aware of Mattia’s capabilities, and today wasn’t his best performance. I capitalized on his errors and aimed to maintain a strong rhythm throughout the match.”
Bellucci struggled to match the Spaniard’s intensity from the baseline.
Alcaraz later mentioned that he had been contemplating his straight-sets defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp at the same stage last year.
“To be honest, the memory of last year crossed my mind when I entered the court. I had some negative thoughts,” he admitted.
“I felt some anxiety, not wanting to repeat the same outcome as last year with a second-round loss.
In the next round, Alcaraz is scheduled to compete against Italian player Luciano Darderi.
