Broad Suggests Archer Should Rest, Atkinson Should Play in Final Test

MANCHESTER: Former England bowler Stuart Broad stated Monday that Jofra Archer should not participate in the fifth Test against India after playing consecutive matches.

Archer featured in his first Test in over four years due to elbow and back problems. His return was notable as he played a key role in England’s victory in the third Test, achieving impressive match figures of 5/105.

The right-arm fast bowler made an immediate impact by dismissing India’s opening batsman, Yashasvi Jaiswal, with his third delivery. His standout performance occurred in the second innings, where he took the important wickets of Jaiswal, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, and Washington Sundar.

Following the Lord’s Test, Archer expressed his intention to play the remaining matches to assist England in winning the series. He was chosen for the fourth Test and secured four wickets for 151 runs.

The right-arm bowler appeared uncomfortable, struggling with discomfort, especially during India’s second innings score of 425/4, which resulted in a draw.

Consequently, Stuart Broad suggested that Archer should rest for the final Test, with Gus Atkinson taking his place. Broad believes Atkinson has yet to face high-quality opposition in Test matches.

“I believe Gus Atkinson needs to play. While he may lack significant workload, it is essential to assess him. He hasn’t truly faced top-tier competition in Test cricket yet,” Broad mentioned.

“[Brydon] Carse seemed exhausted in the fourth Test, demonstrating effort but appearing to have lost stamina. Therefore, Atkinson should be selected.

“[Josh] Tongue began the series, and although he primarily dismissed lower-order batsmen, he could naturally substitute for Archer.

“We cannot afford to sideline Archer for four years, bring him back only to overwork him, and then lose him again for another four years.”
