Mazzulla Extends Contract with Boston Celtics
Joe Mazzulla has agreed to a contract extension with the Boston Celtics, the NBA team announced on Friday. Details regarding the financial terms or duration of the agreement were not disclosed by the organization.
Mazzulla, aged 37, boasts a regular-season record of 182 wins and 64 losses. He also holds a 33-17 playoff record over his three seasons as head coach. In 2024, the Celtics secured a championship under his leadership.
Notably, he is the youngest head coach since Bill Russell in 1968-69 to win an NBA title. Russell was 35 at the time, serving as a player-coach.
Brad Stevens, the team president of basketball operations, expressed his enthusiasm for the contract extension in a public statement.
“We are thrilled that Joe has committed to a longer term with the Celtics. He’s got a great understanding of what’s required for the job and possesses a deep passion for the Celtics. His dedication is matched only by our most ardent supporters,” Stevens stated.
“In his first three years as head coach, Joe has worked diligently and achieved remarkable success. This includes averaging over 60 wins each season and clinching the 2024 NBA Championship.”
Stevens added, “Joe is a truly gifted leader who consistently demonstrates a commitment to learning, growth, and maximizing every opportunity to compete for the Boston Celtics.”
Mazzulla, who previously served as an assistant coach for the Celtics for three seasons, conveyed his gratitude for the opportunity.
“This is a real honor. I would not be in this position without my faith, my wife, and my children. We appreciate the partnership with our ownership, Brad’s guidance, and the support from our staff,” Mazzulla commented.
“Most importantly, I am thankful for the players I’ve had the privilege to coach over the past three seasons. I’m eager to compete for the Celtics and the city of Boston.”
