Silva to Remain at City; Named New Captain

PHILADELPHIA: Following Kevin De Bruyne’s departure, Bernardo Silva has been designated as the new captain of Manchester City by manager Pep Guardiola.

Typically, Guardiola allows players and staff to vote for the captain. However, in a departure from his usual practice, he directly appointed Silva to the leadership role.

Silva’s appointment as captain follows his confirmation that he will be staying with the club through the 2025-26 season.

Speculation surrounding the 30-year-old’s future at City has been ongoing, given that his contract is set to expire in June 2026. Silva has now affirmed his commitment to stay with City this year, stating that discussions about his long-term future are not a current priority.

“I am aware of my plans, but this isn’t the appropriate moment to discuss them. My focus is entirely on the current season and performing well for Man City. I will address the future when the time comes,” Silva commented.

He further added, “With one year remaining on my contract, I have the option to leave next season. I’ve had opportunities in the past, and similar to last year, my choice this year is to remain at Man City.”

Last year, Kyle Walker was appointed as City’s captain. Guardiola has acknowledged his decision to deviate from the norm and personally select the team’s leader this season.

Walker, who departed to join Milan on loan in January, has been omitted from City’s squad for the Club World Cup.

Guardiola mentioned that, for the first time in his managerial career, he opted to choose the captain himself.

“As the manager this season, I made the decision regarding who would be our captain, a first for me,” Guardiola stated.

“I was not satisfied with the situation last season, so I implemented this change this season.

“At times, I want to take charge, and that’s what I’ve done this season by selecting the four captains. We might consider adding one or two more after this World Cup.”
