Wales Remains Confident Despite Setback in World Cup Qualifying

Despite a 4-3 defeat against Belgium on Monday, Wales manager Craig Bellamy asserts that his team is still in contention for World Cup qualification. The loss in Brussels caused them to relinquish their top spot in Group J.

The match against Belgium was expected to be a significant challenge, and early on, it appeared grim for Wales as they fell behind by three goals within the first 30 minutes. However, displaying resilience, Bellamy’s squad rallied to equalize at 3-3, raising hopes of securing a valuable point. Ultimately, Kevin De Bruyne’s late goal dashed those hopes, securing victory for the home side.

“To compete against a top-tier team and maintain our style of play is commendable. I believe the Belgian players recognized that,” stated Bellamy, reflecting on his first defeat as Wales manager following a 10-game unbeaten streak.

“We are determined to move forward. I intend to utilize the next few weeks to rejuvenate, and I maintain immense pride and enthusiasm for what lies ahead.”

Wales currently holds seven points from their initial four matches. North Macedonia leads the group with eight points, while Belgium trails with four points but has only played two games.

The victor of the group secures an automatic berth in the upcoming tournament hosted in North America. The second-place team will enter a playoff for another opportunity to qualify.

Wales is scheduled to face Kazakhstan in September, followed by a rematch against Belgium in Cardiff during October.

Sorba Thomas, who celebrated his first international goal for Wales during Monday’s match, emphasized the team’s character showcased in the second half.

“Despite the loss, we perceive it as a victory in our minds,” he commented. “Against formidable opponents, mistakes are costly. I eagerly anticipate our return match in Cardiff.”

Wales reached the quarter-finals of the 1958 World Cup and did not qualify again until the 2022 finals in Qatar, where they finished at the bottom of their group.
