Bayern Munich Clinches Record 33rd Bundesliga Title

Bayern Munich secured their 33rd Bundesliga title on Sunday, extending their record, without even playing, after Bayer Leverkusen, their only remaining challenger, drew 2-2 with Freiburg. This outcome gave Bayern an insurmountable eight-point advantage with only two matches remaining in the season.

Leverkusen needed a victory on Sunday to maintain a theoretical chance of winning the title, especially after Bayern’s 3-3 draw against RB Leipzig on Saturday.

However, Sunday’s result cemented the defending champions, Leverkusen, in second place with 68 points. Bayern’s 76 points guaranteed them their 33rd Bundesliga title since the league’s inception in 1963.

The Bayern squad, who gathered in Munich to watch the Leverkusen game together, will receive the league trophy on Saturday during their final home game of the season against Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Harry Kane, Bundesliga’s leading scorer, celebrated his first significant title at 31, sharing a video of himself and his teammates singing “We are the Champions” following the Leverkusen match.

The England captain is also on track to become the first player in Bundesliga history to be the top scorer in his first two seasons. Two weeks prior, he set a league record by scoring his 60th goal in his first 60 league appearances for Bayern Munich.

Freiburg, striving for a Champions League spot next season, started strongly, dominating a lackluster Leverkusen side.

Maximilian Eggestein’s slightly deflected shot put the hosts ahead in the 44th minute, giving them complete control of the match.

Freiburg increased their lead four minutes into the second half when Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie scored an own goal after a scramble near the goal.

Leverkusen, whose coach Xabi Alonso is rumored to be departing at the season’s end with interest from major clubs like Real Madrid, mounted a late comeback.

Florian Wirtz narrowed the gap with an impressive solo goal in the 82nd minute, and Jonathan Tah equalized in stoppage time, setting up a tense finale.

Despite matching a league record with their 33rd consecutive Bundesliga away game without a loss, Leverkusen couldn’t find a winning goal in the final moments.
