Ten Hag Inks Two-Year Deal with Bayer Leverkusen
Former Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag has been named as Xabi Alonso’s successor at Bayer Leverkusen, the Bundesliga club announced on Monday.
Ten Hag is making a return to management, agreeing to a two-year contract with the German team. This marks his initial position since his departure from Manchester United in October of 2024.
Despite some difficulties, Leverkusen managed to secure the runner-up position in the Bundesliga, finishing behind champions Bayern Munich.
During his time with United, the Dutch coach led the team to a third-place finish in the 2022–23 Premier League season and achieved victories in both the FA Cup and League Cup over his two seasons.
However, following a disappointing start to the 2024-25 season, Ten Hag was dismissed on October 28 after a 2-1 loss to West Ham.
Prior to his tenure at United, the 55-year-old manager spent four successful years at Ajax, where he secured three league titles and two domestic cups for the Dutch side.
Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, released a statement on Monday, commending Ten Hag’s past achievements and highlighting the club’s acquisition of a highly experienced and successful coach.
“Erik ten Hag brings a wealth of experience and an impressive track record to our club,” Rolfes stated.
“His leadership saw Ajax dominate Dutch football between 2018 and 2022, winning three league titles and two domestic cups.”
Rolfes further added, “Erik also proved his coaching ability through his subsequent successes at Manchester United, even amidst challenging circumstances.”
Ten Hag, who is scheduled to commence his duties on July 1, expressed his high regard for Leverkusen and his intention to develop a formidable squad.
“Leverkusen is one of the foremost clubs in Germany and also a leading club in Europe. I’m here to build on the achievements of recent years and to cultivate a strong team during this transitional phase,” Ten Hag said.
