Barcelona Secures Copa del Rey Title in Thrilling El Clásico
SEVILLE: In a captivating El Clásico showdown at Estadio de La Cartuja on Sunday, Jules Kounde’s extra-time goal sealed the Copa del Rey title for Barcelona, as they overcame Real Madrid with a 3-2 victory.
Pedro González López (Pedri) initiated the scoring for Barcelona in the 28th minute, executing a brilliant finish following Lamine Yamal’s astute cut-back.
Real Madrid mounted a robust response after Kylian Mbappe’s introduction, as he unleashed a superb free-kick in the 70th minute, leveling the score at 1-1. Subsequently, Aurélien Tchouaméni propelled Madrid ahead seven minutes later with a well-executed finish.
Barcelona retaliated, with Ferran Torres equalizing in the 84th minute, once again assisted by Yamal, thereby extending the match into extra time.
Late in extra time, Barcelona was initially granted a penalty, but the decision was overturned upon VAR review.
With the score deadlocked at 2-2, Kounde intercepted a misplaced pass from Luka Modric and seized the opportunity to score the decisive goal, ensuring victory for Hansi Flick’s team.
“It was a great moment to give the fans something to celebrate. Let’s relish it, but with moderation, as the Champions League semifinals are imminent,” remarked Ferran Torres, recognized as Player of the Match.
This triumph marked Barcelona’s third El Clásico win against Real Madrid this season. Earlier, they showcased dominance in the Spanish Super Cup final with a 5-2 triumph in January and triumphed over Madrid 4-0 in La Liga during October.
Barcelona has expanded their record Copa del Rey title collection to 32 and are aiming for a historic quadruple, with sights also set on the La Liga title.
