Australia Announces Squads for India Series
Australia has revealed its limited-overs teams for the matches against India. Marnus Labuschagne will not participate in the ODI series, while Matt Renshaw may make his debut in the 50-over format.
Labuschagne’s exclusion aligns with his underwhelming ODI performances. His highest score in the past ten innings was only 47. This decision allows him to focus on the Sheffield Shield season, where he aims to regain his Test spot after scoring 160 against Tasmania.
Renshaw’s inclusion follows his impressive List A cricket form, which includes a century for Australia A against Sri Lanka earlier this year. Although he opens in red-ball cricket, Renshaw has excelled in the middle order in the 50-over format, averaging 48.68 with six centuries since November 2021. He was also a part of the ODI squad against Pakistan in 2022.
Mitchell Starc, who last played an ODI in November 2023, returns to boost the pace attack. Alex Carey will miss the first game in Perth to play in South Australia’s second Sheffield Shield match. Josh Inglis has recovered from a calf strain and is available for both formats.
The selection panel has only announced the squad for the first two T20Is, with player workload management expected for the remaining games due to the Test season and Ashes preparation. Glenn Maxwell is still recovering from a broken wrist sustained before the New Zealand series and will miss the T20Is.
Cameron Green will play in the ODIs but will be rested from the T20Is to focus on red-ball preparation for the summer.
According to George Bailey, the chair of selectors, the management carefully planned the squads to balance white-ball preparation with upcoming red-ball commitments. He noted that most of the T20 squad will remain together to prepare for the World Cup next year while ensuring certain individuals are ready for the Test series.
Cooper Connolly retained his place in the ODI squad after taking 5 for 22 in Mackay against South Africa. Mitchell Owen, who missed the South Africa series due to concussion, might make his ODI debut. Nathan Ellis returns to the T20I setup after missing the New Zealand tour for the birth of his child, while Sean Abbott will not be in the ODI squad but remains in the T20Is.
The ODI series will be held in Perth (October 19), Adelaide (October 23), and Sydney (October 25). The first two T20Is are scheduled for Canberra (October 29) and Melbourne (October 31), with the remaining three matches in early November.
