In a surprising turn of events at the Cincinnati Open on Thursday, French qualifier Terence Atmane, defeated world number nine Holger Rune with a score of 6-2, 6-3. This win sets up a semi-final match against Jannik Sinner for Atmane.
Atmane, aged 23, is experiencing a career milestone, reaching the semi-final of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time. Notably, he is also the first qualifier in a decade to reach the final four in Cincinnati.
The world number 136, Atmane, previously triumphed over world number four Taylor Fritz in the round of 16.
The 23-year-old expressed his excitement after the victory, acknowledging that reaching the Masters 1000 semi-final for the first time would significantly boost his career.
