Yasir Sultan Secures Bronze at Asian Throwing Championship

SOUTH KOREA: Pakistani javelin athlete Yasir Sultan shone on Friday, clinching the bronze medal at the Asian Throwing Championship held in South Korea.

At this important competition, Sultan achieved his season’s best throw, reaching a distance of 77.43 meters and securing the third-place position.

His initial attempt was a foul, but he marked 75.79m on his second attempt. Subsequent throws in the third and fourth rounds measured 72.57m and 72.88m, respectively.

The fifth attempt also resulted in a foul. However, in his sixth and concluding attempt, he launched his best throw of the season at 77.43m, thereby guaranteeing the bronze medal.

Pathirage of Sri Lanka won the gold medal, attaining a distance of 82.05 meters, ensuring his place at the top.

Yasir was the only participant representing Pakistan at the event. National coach Fayyaz Bukhari was present with him throughout the competition.

Meanwhile, Arshad Nadeem, Pakistan’s prominent javelin thrower and Olympic gold medalist, was absent from the championship.

Following a recent surgery, Arshad is currently undergoing rehabilitation and has not yet completely recovered. He had successful calf muscle surgery last month in Cambridge.

He is also expected to miss the upcoming Diamond League events in Poland and Switzerland.

Despite a positive start to his recovery, medical professionals have cautioned against his early return to competitive sports. Consequently, he will not participate in any competitions soon.

His rehabilitation is underway, and in accordance with medical advice, he has commenced light exercises and gym routines as part of the recovery process.

Notably, Arshad was initially scheduled to participate in the Diamond League in Silesia, Poland, on August 16, followed by another tournament in Zurich, Switzerland, on August 27.

However, he will be unable to compete in these championships due to his continued rehabilitation.

Last year, Arshad gained international recognition by breaking the Olympic javelin record with an impressive throw of 92.97 meters at the Paris Olympics, leading to a gold medal victory.

Maintaining his performance, Arshad replicated this success at the Asian Athletics Championship last month, securing another gold medal with a throw of 86.40 meters.

Nadeem initially rose to prominence after winning a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, which was then followed by a silver medal at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.

To date, he has achieved four gold, one silver, and four bronze medals across diverse events, including the Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Islamic Solidarity Games, South Asian Games, and Asian U20 Championships.
