McCullum Updates on Stokes and Wood’s Fitness Ahead of Ashes

CARDIFF: With the five-Test series between England and Australia commencing on November 21, 2025, England’s head coach, Brendon McCullum, has offered updates regarding the condition of captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Mark Wood. He voiced optimism that both players will achieve full fitness before the Ashes series in Australia.

McCullum informed the media that Stokes and Wood are dedicated to their rehabilitation programs, aiming to be completely fit for the competition.

“Stokesy is committed to his training. His leadership during the previous series was exceptional. To be competitive in Australia, we require Ben Stokes to be in prime condition, and he is working tirelessly to ensure that happens,” McCullum stated.

Stokes sustained a shoulder injury during the fourth Test against India, which prevented him from participating in the final match. Ollie Pope took over as captain in his absence.

Prior to his injury, Stokes demonstrated excellent form throughout the series. The 34-year-old bowled 140 overs in four Tests, securing 17 wickets with an average of 25.24.

He also scored 304 runs in seven innings, maintaining a striking average of 43.43, thus emphasizing his importance to the squad.

Meanwhile, right-arm pacer Mark Wood is recovering from a left knee injury and is in the process of rehabilitation.

Wood has faced multiple injuries during his career, having undergone eight surgeries since his debut for England in 2015. His fitness will be carefully evaluated in the upcoming weeks as England finalizes its Ashes team.

The announcement of England’s Ashes squad is anticipated later this month. The inaugural Test is scheduled to commence in Perth on November 21, 2025.

Historically, Australia has been the dominant team in the Ashes, winning 140 out of 340 matches, whereas England has won 108. Australia also leads in series victories with 34, compared to England’s 32.
