England Gears Up for Ashes with India Test Series

The highly anticipated five-match series between England and India is scheduled to commence on June 20.

Former English spinner Graeme Swann views the approaching five-Test series against India, beginning on June 20, as excellent groundwork for England leading up to the Ashes.

In discussions with international media prior to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Swann voiced his assurance that England will outperform India on their home ground this time.

“This is honestly the best possible preparation for the Ashes. The India series is massive. In the last few visits to India, we’ve been completely outmatched. So, on our own soil, in familiar conditions, we must defeat India. Our performance needs to be top-notch,” Swann stated.

He emphasized that the series presents a crucial examination for England’s somewhat unseasoned bowling unit, affording them the chance to gain form and self-assurance before confronting Australia.

Swann also highlighted the difficulties for India, mentioning the absence of prominent players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He feels England should seize this chance to leverage the home advantage and strive for a commanding outcome.

“Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, absolute batting stars, won’t be there. Of course, they have other talented players stepping in, but we possess bowlers who are adept at exploiting our conditions and bowling effectively,” he elaborated.

Swann anticipates a convincing victory for England, expecting it to cultivate essential momentum as they progress towards the Ashes later in the year.

“England should aim to secure this series, and they should pursue a decisive victory. I’d prefer 4-1, but 3-2 would suffice. I genuinely hope we excel and carry that assurance into the Ashes,” he concluded.

England concluded their 2023–25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle in fifth position, achieving 11 wins out of 22 matches.

Their last Ashes victory at home was in 2015 with a 3-2 result, and they haven’t managed to win a Test match in Australia since 2011.

Notably, the five-match Test series between England and India is poised to kick off at Headingley, Leeds on June 20. Subsequent matches are planned for Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval.
