Arteta Optimistic About Gyokeres, Pledges Supportive Environment
Arsenal’s latest acquisition, Swedish forward Viktor Gyokeres, is set to potentially debut in the Premier League against Manchester United. Manager Mikel Arteta conveyed his anticipation on Friday, suggesting Gyokeres is poised to make a “tremendous impact” this season as the team aims for trophies.
Arsenal spent nearly 200 million pounds ($271.12 million) this summer to acquire six new players, including Viktor Gyokeres, who was highly sought after following his impressive 54 goals for Sporting last season.
Benjamin Sesko was previously a target for Arsenal before his transfer to United. In an interesting turn of events, these two clubs’ new strikers are scheduled to compete at Old Trafford during a rare season-opening match between these long-standing Premier League rivals.
“I can only express my happiness about having Viktor. He is expected to significantly influence the team, and his integration has been exceptionally smooth. We are delighted to have secured him,” Arteta commented to the press.
“Numerous forwards have transitioned from various leagues and achieved success. It’s our responsibility to establish an optimal environment for Viktor to excel at his strength, which is scoring goals.
“He is continuously improving. He is typically a very fit athlete and has displayed glimpses of his abilities in our two pre-season matches. We’ll see what he delivers on Sunday.”
Arteta also noted that newly acquired midfielder Martin Zubimendi has assimilated effectively into the squad and is prepared for Sunday’s match.
Having finished as Premier League runners-up in the past three seasons, Arsenal faces pressure to secure a league title following reinforcements in crucial areas.
“Consistent effort will eventually lead to success. This is a principle I’ve always adhered to,” Arteta stated.
“Over the last three seasons, we’ve accumulated more points than any other team in the league, demonstrating our consistency. Now, we need to sustain that performance throughout an entire season.”
Arsenal icon Tony Adams proposed that Arteta should consider transferring the captaincy from Martin Odegaard, whose performance was impacted by injuries last season, to Declan Rice.
However, Arteta affirmed that the decision to maintain Odegaard as captain was unanimous.
“My stance is firm, and it reflects the consensus of the staff and players. They voted for the captain, and the outcome was clear,” Arteta explained.
“Almost everyone, overwhelmingly, selected Martin Odegaard, signaling their strong support.
“It demonstrates their confidence in him to lead, develop, and secure victories in our matches.”
