Saliba and Magalhaes: Premier League’s Top Defensive Pair

Arsenal’s central defender, William Saliba, reaffirmed his dedication to the club on Tuesday, signing a five-year extension to his contract amidst speculation of interest from Real Madrid.

Since his arrival at Arsenal from St Etienne in 2019, Saliba has participated in 140 matches across all competitions, building a formidable partnership with Brazilian player Gabriel Magalhaes in the team’s defensive center.

The duo of Saliba and Magalhaes is arguably the finest in the Premier League, significantly bolstering Arsenal’s effectiveness during set-piece plays.

Saliba commented on his contract extension, conveying his enthusiasm and satisfaction with his continued presence at the club.

“I am very proud because my initial signing was in 2019, and here I am in 2025, renewing my commitment. It brings me great joy,” stated Saliba.

Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, remarked that everyone appreciates the centre-back’s character, noting his increasing commitment to the team daily.

“William is well-regarded by all his fellow players and staff members, which is a testament to his character, dedication, and everyday attitude,” Arteta commented.

He further mentioned that Saliba has exhibited substantial responsibility and cultivated a bond among everyone associated with the club.

“Since he joined, William has developed considerably, embraced responsibility, and forged a solid connection with our fans and everyone involved with the club,” Arteta added.

It is worth noting that Arsenal has finished as the runner-up in the past three Premier League seasons and has been in pursuit of a Premier League title for the last 21 years.

During the offseason, they made several additions, including Spanish defender Cristhian Mosquera, English forwards Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze, and Swedish attacker Viktor Gyokeres.
