Angels Secure Victory Over Red Sox with Late-Inning Rally
ANAHEIM: A leadoff home run by Zach Neto and a significant sacrifice fly from Christian Moore during an explosive four-run eighth inning propelled the Los Angeles Angels to a 9-5 triumph over the Boston Red Sox at Angel Stadium on Monday.
The score was deadlocked at 5-5 before the Angels seized control in the eighth. LaMonte Wade Jr. initiated the rally with a single against Boston’s reliever, Garrett Whitlock, followed by Luis Rengifo drawing a walk.
Moore’s sacrifice fly then pushed the Angels ahead with a 6-5 lead. Neto, who had an impressive performance with three hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored, was intentionally walked, loading the bases for Mike Trout.
Taylor Ward capitalized with a bases-loaded walk, forcing in another run, and Travis d’Arnaud punctuated the inning with a two-run single, broadening the Angels’ advantage to 9-5.
On the pitching front, Angels left-hander Reid Detmers delivered a scoreless seventh inning, showcasing a sharp fastball. Sam Bachman efficiently retired the Red Sox in order during the eighth.
Closer Kenley Jansen was forced to leave the game prematurely in the ninth due to shoulder cramps after delivering only four pitches. Hector Neris stepped in to secure the final outs.
Boston’s starting pitcher, Walker Buehler, encountered difficulties early on, surrendering five runs in the first inning, which included four walks and two hit batters.
The Red Sox mounted a comeback to tie the score in the sixth, highlighted by a solo home run from Trevor Story. Earlier, Boston had scored three runs in the first inning against Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz, with Wilyer Abreu contributing a two-run single.
A pivotal moment occurred in the fifth when Boston’s Jarren Duran hesitated on a ground ball, resulting in a double play and the subsequent ejection of Boston’s manager, Alex Cora, for the second consecutive game, following a dispute over a base-blocking call involving Rengifo.
The Angels improved their season record with this win. The Red Sox will aim to rebound in their next game.
The series is set to continue on Tuesday night, featuring Red Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet against Angels lefty Tyler Anderson.
