Mathews Announces Farewell Test Match Against Bangladesh

Sri Lankan cricket icon Angelo Mathews has declared his retirement from Test cricket, confirming that his final game will be the opening Test against Bangladesh in June.

Mathews stated his willingness to continue playing for Sri Lanka in limited-overs formats “if my nation requires me,” in a message posted on social media.

Mathews, who hasn’t played in Sri Lanka’s white-ball squads for almost a year, will conclude a remarkable Test career of 119 matches. Since his debut in 2009, he has been a consistent presence in the team.

Sri Lanka’s infrequent Test schedule influenced his choice, as Mathews, who will turn 38 next week, would likely have faced a prolonged wait until May 2026 for another Test opportunity.

The former Sri Lankan captain conveyed his appreciation for the sport and his supporters in an emotional statement.

“My dear friends and family, With a grateful heart and unforgettable memories. It is time for me to bid farewell to the most cherished format of the game, International Test Cricket! Representing Sri Lanka in cricket for the past 17 years has been my greatest honour and pride. Nothing compares to the sense of patriotism and duty when wearing the National Jersey,” Mathews expressed in his statement.

The 37-year-old expressed gratitude to Sri Lankan cricket fans for their unwavering support and revealed his final red-ball cricket match for his country.

“I have devoted everything to cricket, and cricket has reciprocated by shaping me into the person I am today. I am grateful to the game and thankful to the thousands of Sri Lanka Cricket fans who have supported me throughout my career, during both triumphs and setbacks. The first Test match against Bangladesh in June will mark my final red-ball appearance for my country,” the statement continued.

During his career, Mathews captained Sri Lanka in 34 Tests, leading the team to notable victories, including the memorable 2014 Headingley Test, where his pivotal innings of 160 was crucial.

As a batsman, Mathews accumulated 8,167 Test runs, ranking third on Sri Lanka’s all-time list behind legends Kumar Sangakkara (12,400) and Mahela Jayawardene (11,814). He recorded 16 centuries with an impressive average of 44.62. While not primarily a bowler, he also took 33 Test wickets.

Mathews was at his best between 2013 and 2015, amassing 2,378 runs at an impressive average of 59.45, primarily batting at number five or six.

Although he never quite reached those levels again, he remained a valuable contributor, especially in 2022 and 2023, scoring 2,141 runs combined at an average of 51.15, after moving up to the number four position.

His most recent Test century was against Afghanistan in February 2024.

His career has faced some controversy, notably in 2017 and 2018, when he had a public disagreement with then-coach Chandika Hathurusingha.

In recent years, Mathews has focused on his fitness, overcoming challenges from leg injuries that affected him earlier in his career.
