Amorim Hails Fernandes’ Leadership in Preseason Victory
NEW JERSEY: Following Manchester United’s 2-1 preseason triumph over West Ham United at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, manager Ruben Amorim commended captain Bruno Fernandes for his influential performance leading the team from the front.
Fernandes scored both goals, converting an early penalty with composure and netting a superb shot in the second half, securing the victory in the competitive match held at MetLife Stadium.
While previously linked to a potential transfer to Saudi Pro League’s Al Hilal, Fernandes demonstrated his value last season, contributing 19 goals and 19 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions for United, earning him the club’s Player of the Year award.
The Portuguese midfielder made the decision to remain with Manchester United last month.
Amorim highlighted that Fernandes’ goal-scoring and assist records are outstanding, emphasizing the club’s commitment to providing him with additional support to enhance his leadership role.
He noted that Fernandes sometimes becomes overly frustrated and loses concentration. Amorim said his main issue is that sometimes he loses his focus and gets frustrated.
“It was so clear last season, you can see it with the goals and assists. But it’s not just that,” Amorim said.
“I think now he has more players, I feel, to help him to lead the group, and that is a good thing. He is our leader and really important, not just on the field but off the field. He leads by example.
“Sometimes, the problem is he gets frustrated and loses a little bit of focus of his job. Sometimes, he wants to help the teammates so much, it is not the best thing to do. They have to do their job, and Bruno has, for example, to wait for the ball.”
