Alcaraz Dethrones Sinner to Win US Open and No. 1 Ranking
Toni Nadal, uncle and former coach of tennis icon Rafael Nadal, has lauded Carlos Alcaraz’s impressive US Open triumph over Jannik Sinner of Italy, as reported by various international media outlets on Wednesday.
Alcaraz concluded Sinner’s US Open journey with a convincing 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory. This win secured the title and solidified his position in the evolving rivalry between the leading figures in men’s tennis.
The New York title also propelled Alcaraz back to the top of the rankings since 2023, with the 22-year-old Spaniard overtaking Sinner. He now boasts a total of six Grand Slam trophies.
This achievement marks him as the second youngest player in the professional era, which began in 1968, to secure six major titles, following Bjorn Borg. Furthermore, it halted Sinner’s remarkable 27-match winning streak at hardcourt majors, impacting the Italian’s otherwise stellar season.
Toni Nadal, a respected Spanish tennis coach and Rafael Nadal’s former mentor, commended Alcaraz’s performance against Sinner. He emphasized that the US Open victory held particular significance for the Spaniard, preventing his competitor from matching his five titles.
“The US Open final victory over Jannik was a crucial moment for Carlos. He secured his sixth Major title, preventing his formidable rival from equaling his tally of five trophies,” Toni stated.
Toni Nadal observed that Jannik Sinner was not performing optimally against Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open final. He suggested that even if the Italian had played at a higher level, the outcome might have remained the same.
“With the title and the addition of 2000 ATP points, Carlos supplanted Jannik as the world’s number one player after a 65-week reign. Jannik wasn’t at his peak, but even if he had been, it is unlikely he could have overcome the level of play displayed by the Spaniard,” Toni concluded.
