Alcaraz Set to Clash with Zverev in Semi-Final Showdown
CINCINNATI: At the P&G Center Court on Friday, Carlos Alcaraz, the second-seeded player from Spain, triumphed over Andrey Rublev, the ninth-seeded Russian, with scores of 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, securing his place in the Cincinnati Open semi-final.
Alcaraz showcased his dominance in the initial set, rapidly gaining a significant advantage before sealing the set without much difficulty. In the second set, Rublev elevated his performance, narrowly winning a closely contested set with a score of 6-4, thus pushing the match into a deciding set.
During the final set, Alcaraz demonstrated resilience under pressure, clinching the hard-fought set 7-5 to secure the overall victory.
Following his win, Alcaraz highlighted the significance of sustaining concentration, mentioning that a lapse in focus on just a few instances could determine the outcome of a set or even the entire match.
Alcaraz’s Quote:
“When competing against someone like Andrey, losing focus on just two or three plays can be decisive. I maintained a strong mental game, and that’s what gives me the most satisfaction,” Alcaraz stated.
The 22-year-old athlete, boasting a record of 37 wins in his most recent 39 matches, has now reached his 12th Masters 1000 semi-final, putting him on par with Jannik Sinner, the world’s top-ranked player. Sinner is scheduled to compete against Terence Atmane, a qualifier from France, in the other semi-final match.
Alcaraz further commented that embracing the challenges presented by a demanding third set is vital to his approach.
Alcaraz’s Additional Remarks:
“It involves embracing the current situation, acknowledging that I am in a third set, and understanding that it will be an intense battle, which I find appealing,” he expressed.
In the upcoming semi-final on Saturday, Alcaraz is slated to face Alexander Zverev, the third seed. Zverev secured his advancement with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ben Shelton earlier in the day.
