Alcaraz to Miss Canadian Open
Carlos Alcaraz is the latest player to withdraw from the upcoming Canadian Open, joining Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Jack Draper, according to reports from Spanish media on Monday.
Sinner, the reigning Wimbledon champion, Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam victor, and Draper, Britain’s top-ranked player, had already announced their withdrawal from the Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto on Sunday.
According to a Spanish newspaper, Alcaraz will be absent from the Canadian Open, scheduled from July 27 to August 7.
Alcaraz, currently ranked number two globally, recently lost to Sinner in a thrilling four-set Wimbledon final on July 13, ending his 24-match winning streak.
The five-time Grand Slam champion is reportedly taking a break to ensure he is in peak condition for the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati, commencing on August 8.
Notably, Alcaraz also did not participate in the 2024 Canada Masters held in Montreal.
Sinner, the world number one, announced on Sunday that he had decided to withdraw from the tournament after consulting with his team, citing the need to recover from a right elbow injury. He secured his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto in 2023.
Sinner stated, “Winning that title in Toronto two years ago marked the beginning of a truly significant period for me, but after discussions with my team, I need to prioritize recovery.”
Djokovic attributed his withdrawal from the Canadian tournament, where he has triumphed four times, to a groin injury.
Draper is sidelined with an arm injury, which is expected to keep him off the court for at least a month leading up to the US Open in late August.
Draper is expected to miss both the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open, with hopes of recovering in time for the US Open.
