Alcaraz Set to Clash with Djokovic in US Open Semifinals
NEW YORK: In a commanding display of skill, second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz sailed into the US Open semifinals, defeating Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday.
Alcaraz started strong, securing an initial break against Lehecka in the match’s very first game. He capitalized on Lehecka’s early double faults and concluded the first set with a remarkable backhand.
The Spaniard increased his dominance in the second set, achieving two breaks as Lehecka struggled to respond. Alcaraz electrified the audience with a spectacular 12-shot rally, followed by his trademark golf swing gesture.
Sergio Garcia, the 2017 Masters champion and fellow Spaniard, observed the match from the stands and commended Alcaraz on his comprehensive development in recent years.
Reflecting on his performance, Alcaraz emphasized the mental advantage gained by demonstrating endurance to opponents.
“Showing your opponent that you’re still energetic and prepared to compete for an extended duration, to engage in lengthy rallies, creates a perception that it will be a difficult challenge,” Alcaraz commented.
“My demeanor between points, displaying a positive attitude and indicating that I feel physically strong, is crucial. It conveys to the opponent that they must exert significant effort to defeat me.”
With this victory, Alcaraz is now scheduled for a much-anticipated semifinal match against 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. A victory would also move the Spaniard closer to regaining the world number one position, adding to the significance of their forthcoming match.
