Wasim Akram Advocates for Babar Azam’s T20 Return and Optimal Batting Position
Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has endorsed the return of Babar Azam to the national T20 squad prior to the Asia Cup. He highlighted the significance of having a seasoned batter for critical tournaments.
Babar’s last T20 International appearance for Pakistan was against South Africa in December 2024. After a series of mediocre performances, including concerns about his strike rate, he was removed from the team.
In a recent interview, Akram conveyed his strong support for reintegrating the experienced batter into the T20 structure.
“Given the opportunity, I would certainly want Babar Azam in the national T20 team,” Akram stated.
“With the Asia Cup and the World Cup approaching, a senior batter is essential. When he played for Somerset in 2019, he achieved a strike rate close to 150. His adaptability in batting is a valuable asset,” he elaborated.
Akram emphasized the value of experience in high-stakes matches, especially in major tournaments. He also underscored Babar’s capability to manage run-chasing scenarios.
“While chasing scores of 140 or 160, particularly against formidable teams, it’s crucial to have a player who can assume responsibility and lead the team. Babar is among the best players globally,” he commented.
“He modifies his gameplay to suit the format and the game situation, a skill he has demonstrated before and can replicate. Babar still has a significant amount of cricket ahead of him and is capable of achieving great success for Pakistan. He requires our collective encouragement,” he added.
Regarding Babar’s most suitable position in the batting order, Akram shared his tactical insight.
“The coach has the flexibility to position Babar as needed. I believe number three is perfect for him, contingent on the circumstances. If numerous overs remain, an alternate player could be sent in initially,” he concluded.
It is worth noting that Babar’s recent T20I performance has faced scrutiny. Over his last 10 matches, he has scored 236 runs at an average of 26, without achieving a half-century.
He also failed to reach double digits in three of his most recent five innings.
It is important to recall that Babar last captained the national team during the 2024 T20 World Cup. Pakistan’s disappointing performance prompted the PCB to prioritize the development of younger players.
