Afridi Voices Doubt Over India’s Sincerity After Skipping Match Against Pakistan
BIRMINGHAM: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has ignited controversy before the highly anticipated World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 semi-final between Pakistan Champions and India Champions, scheduled for Thursday at Edgbaston.
During an appearance at a local eatery, Afridi questioned India’s true intentions regarding facing Pakistan in the crucial knockout game, particularly after their earlier withdrawal from the league-stage match on July 20, which they attributed to political tensions.
“How can India face Pakistan in a semi-final with any credibility?” Afridi asked, pointing out the apparent contradiction in India’s approach.
Adding to the intrigue, reports from Indian media on Wednesday suggested that several prominent India Champions players, including captain Yuvraj Singh, Shikhar Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, and Yusuf Pathan, are hesitant to participate in the semi-final due to persistent political tensions and public sentiment.
During India’s group-stage game against England on July 27, a fan questioned Dhawan about his potential involvement in the semi-final against Pakistan.
Dhawan, appearing annoyed, replied, “You’re asking the wrong person. Do you really think I will answer that? You shouldn’t even ask. If I didn’t play before, I still won’t play.”
India’s journey to the semi-finals was eventful. Following their withdrawal from the Pakistan match, they rebounded strongly with a convincing victory over West Indies Champions at Grace Road on Tuesday.
All-rounder Stuart Binny shone with impressive figures of 2/17 and a quickfire half-century, leading India to a five-wicket win. This victory, achieved in just 13.2 overs, allowed India to overtake England Champions on net run rate, securing their place in the semi-final.
Pakistan Champions concluded at the top of the standings with four victories out of five matches, earning nine points and maintaining a net run rate of +2.452.
South Africa and Australia secured the second and third positions, respectively, setting up the other semi-final clash.
The uncertainty surrounding India’s participation continues to loom over what could be a thrilling showdown, as fans eagerly await confirmation on whether the highly anticipated match will proceed as planned.
