I grew up in between two nations,” reflects Guadalupe over coffee in the Asociación de Mujeres (AMA) office a poignant symbol of her upbringing along the Mexico–Guatemala border. Her story weaves the tension of heritage: Maya rituals alongside Catholic practices, a “both-and-everything” spirituality that shapes AMA’s inclusive ethos.
Bridging Cultures, Rooting Identity
Guadalupe’s family embodies the fusion of cultural identities her grandmother blending Maya traditions with Catholicism, despite facing exclusion from the church. AMA mirrors this duality, embracing both Latin and indigenous influences as women lead programming rooted in local needs. American partner Ben, co-founder, strengthens transnational support, ensuring reciprocity rather than one-sided aid.
Women’s Circles: Catalysts for Change
Antonieta began AMA’s first women’s circle in Bella Vista to bring clean-burning stoves to homes improving respiratory health and daily well-being. But soon, these gatherings evolved into safe spaces for women to share, choose projects, and practice leadership.
Over time, participants acknowledged the deeper impact: emotional healing, self-worth, and leadership emerged as powerful outcomes. Antonieta remembers, “Even though sometimes I got a little stuck when I spoke…I kept going. And it was working.” She now serves as AMA’s vice president and no longer feels she doesn’t belong.
Weaving Dignity Through Tradition and Healing
AMA’s Pixan textile program teaches women weaving skills and creates economic opportunities. More than handicrafts, these textiles are expressions of cultural dignity and art. Therapy and group support help women process trauma and reclaim their lives. As Antonieta shares, “Through the therapy… I was able to forgive myself…and support other women.” Today, Lesly leads her own circles, embodying resilience and transformation.
Trust, Solidarity, Sustained Impact
A defining image captures Antonieta and Guadalupe embracing in front of woven tapestries proof of long-laid trust and leadership. Lesly, once told she was “good for nothing,” now beams: “And now look where I am.” Through solidarity and shared purpose, AMA’s women are weaving a new future for their communities.
