Yankees Secure Victory Over Mariners, Cabrera Injured

SEATTLE: Trent Grisham’s pair of home runs powered the New York Yankees to an 11-5 triumph against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on Monday evening.

However, the Yankees’ significant win was overshadowed by an injury to third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera, who was transported off the field via ambulance after an incident in the ninth inning.

Cabrera was injured while scoring on a sacrifice fly from Aaron Judge. His awkward slide toward home plate apparently led to an injury to his left leg.

Grisham’s Performance

Grisham, who has experienced a slow start to the 2024 season, provided the Yankees with an initial advantage with a solo home run in the third inning. He then followed up with another homer in the fifth, an inning in which New York scored six runs.

Additional Highlights
  • During that same inning, Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger each recorded RBI singles against Seattle pitcher Emerson Hancock.
  • Austin Wells subsequently extended the lead with a three-run homer.

Goldschmidt’s single prolonged his streak of recording at least one hit in each away game this season. The seasoned first baseman currently has seven doubles, two home runs, and 11 RBIs on the road.

Clarke Schmidt (1-1) of the Yankees earned the win after pitching six innings. He conceded three runs and three hits, walked two, and struck out six.

For the Mariners, Julio Rodríguez and Jorge Polanco each hit solo home runs, while Cal Raleigh contributed a two-run homer in the eighth inning.

Seattle’s defeat marked their fourth straight loss, leaving them just one and a half games ahead of the Oakland Athletics in the AL West standings.

The two teams are set to meet again on Tuesday evening for the second game of their three-game series, with Seattle’s Bryan Woo scheduled to face the Yankees’ Max Fried.
