Wrestling Icon Sabu Passes Away at 60

The wrestling world mourns the loss of Sabu, a legend celebrated for his groundbreaking contributions to hardcore wrestling. WWE announced on Sunday that Sabu, aged 60, had passed away.

Born Terry Brunk, Sabu garnered a dedicated following due to his audacious, high-stakes performances and intensely violent bouts that redefined the boundaries of professional wrestling.

Sabu’s final match was during WrestleMania weekend in Las Vegas. He faced Joey Janela from Game Changer Wrestling in a no-ropes barbed wire match, which was symbolic of his hardcore legacy.

“WWE expresses its condolences to Sabu’s family, friends and fans. We are saddened to learn about the passing of Terry Brunk, recognized by wrestling enthusiasts as Sabu,” the company stated.

Game Changer Wrestling (GCW) also honored Sabu, noting, “He was an innovator and an outlaw. He served as an inspiration to many who entered a GCW ring and will continue to motivate future generations.
His legacy will endure forever, and he will always be remembered. Rest in Peace, and Long Live SABU.”

Sabu, the nephew of wrestling icon Ed Farhat, known to WWE fans as The Sheik, continued the family’s wrestling heritage with remarkable passion.

Throughout his extensive career, he participated in several global promotions, notably ECW, WCW, WWE, NJPW, FMW, TNA, XPW, AJPW, BJW, and AEW, among others.

Sabu made a substantial impact on Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), where he played a vital role in defining and popularizing hardcore wrestling.

He achieved Triple Crown status in ECW, securing the ECW World Heavyweight Championship twice, the ECW World Tag Team Championship three times, and the ECW World Television Championship.

Sabu also held the FTW Heavyweight Championship.

After joining WWE, Sabu participated in unforgettable matches against John Cena for the WWE Championship and Rey Mysterio for the World Heavyweight Championship.
