Prime Minister Sharif Lauds World Bank’s Stance on Indus Waters Treaty

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday acknowledged the World Bank’s support for Pakistan’s position regarding the Indus Waters Treaty. He noted that this backing is especially important given India’s independent actions, which could potentially compromise essential international agreements.

During a meeting with Ousmane Dione, the World Bank Regional Vice President for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, the Prime Minister conveyed his gratitude for the Bank’s principled stance.

Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm dedication to upholding international law, fostering regional peace, and pursuing resolutions to disputes through dialogue.

Following an incident in April in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 individuals lost their lives, New Delhi suspended its involvement in the 1960 transboundary treaty. They attributed the attack to Pakistan, a claim that Islamabad has refuted.

Highlighting the enduring partnership between Pakistan and the World Bank, Shehbaz Sharif expressed his appreciation for the strategic Country Partnership Framework. This framework has been instrumental in advancing Pakistan’s developmental goals in crucial sectors, including energy, education, climate resilience, and governance.

The Prime Minister also thanked the World Bank for their rapid and substantial aid following the devastating floods of 2022. This assistance facilitated quick relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts across the affected regions.

Ousmane Dione confirmed the Bank’s commitment to enhancing its collaboration with Pakistan and supporting key areas of economic advancement. He commended Pakistan’s advancement in macroeconomic recovery and the government’s initiatives to ensure fiscal stability and sustainable economic growth.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to strengthen cooperation towards achieving long-term development objectives and securing a more prosperous future for the people of Pakistan.
