Decision on Pakistan’s Pro League Participation Expected Soon
Sources suggest that the Pakistan hockey team is likely to participate in the forthcoming FIH Pro League.
The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has reportedly received encouraging indications from the government regarding participation in the esteemed competition. The PHF has voiced confidence about the team’s potential involvement in the league.
It is important to note that a conclusive decision is still pending, and the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has yet to receive formal notification. The deadline set by the FIH for Pakistan to confirm participation is August 12. A definitive decision is anticipated later in the week.
Pakistan’s potential inclusion follows New Zealand’s withdrawal from the event, presenting an opportunity for Pakistan to return to elite international hockey.
Hockey New Zealand communicated its withdrawal to the FIH, citing financial limitations as the main reason. Reports indicate that New Zealand has significantly reduced its budget for the current Olympic cycle, compelling the federation to make tough choices.
Previously, New Zealand had also decided against sending its women’s team to the Pro League due to similar budget constraints.
This development occurred after Pakistan secured the runner-up position in the recent FIH Nations Cup, positioning them as the next eligible team for Pro League inclusion.
Should Pakistan decline the invitation due to financial or logistical issues, France may be considered as an alternative to fill the vacant spot in the tournament.
It is worth mentioning that the FIH has also given Pakistan until August 12 to inform the federation of their decision regarding the invitation.
