Protest Over Power and Water Cuts Gridlocks Karachi’s Punjab Colony

Residents of Punjab Colony demonstrated on Saturday morning by obstructing both lanes of the primary road leading to Defence Moor. The demonstration protested against the lack of electricity and water in the area, leading to substantial traffic delays on vital routes.

Many drivers and commuters faced traffic congestion for over four hours in Punjab Colony and nearby areas. Significant traffic jams were also observed near Boat Basin.

Traffic authorities rerouted smaller vehicles via the Gizri underpass as an alternative. Vehicles coming from Korangi were redirected toward Khayaban-e-Jami.

The demonstration occurred after K-Electric allegedly disconnected the electricity to their residential building around 11 am on Friday.

The power outage followed an operation by K-Electric targeting unauthorized connections in the adjacent PNT Colony, during which a disagreement arose between the power company’s personnel and residents.

The building’s residents, housing 80 apartments, asserted that they were not involved in the argument but were still affected by the power cut.

The demonstrators concluded their protest after five hours when authorities promised to restore the power supply.

Following the conclusion of the demonstration, both routes from Punjab Colony to Defence Mor were reopened for vehicles.

The demonstrators ended their protest after five hours following the assurance of the restoration of electricity service.

After the protest concluded, both routes from Punjab Colony to Defence Mor were reopened to traffic.
