Pipeline Burst Floods University of Karachi Campus

A significant pipeline failure in close proximity to the University of Karachi (KU) resulted in widespread flooding on Tuesday, prompting an immediate response from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC).

The incident involved a rupture in an 84-inch diameter supply conduit, identified as Siphon No. 19. This caused extensive inundation, impacting more than half of the KU’s residential zones and causing water to infiltrate dwellings within the university grounds.

The KWSC released a statement acknowledging that the pipe burst might precipitate a partial suspension of water delivery to numerous localities throughout Karachi.

According to a KWSC representative, the organization’s Chief Executive Officer, Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, became aware of the crisis and instructed teams to promptly undertake remediation efforts.

To safeguard personnel engaged in the repair operation and to optimize the workflow, the water flow in the compromised pipeline was decreased temporarily. Comprehensive repair procedures have been set in motion and will proceed continuously.

The representative further indicated that the repair work is anticipated to take up to 96 hours. It is expected that the water distribution to various areas of Karachi will experience temporary cutbacks throughout this timeframe.

Areas expected to be impacted encompass Chanesar Town, Jinnah Town, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, Pak Colony, Golimar, Shershah, Old City Area, Landhi, Korangi, in addition to PAF Base Masroor.

Karachi typically obtains a cumulative water provision of 650 million gallons daily (MGD); however, the municipality is predicted to encounter a transient deficit of 250 MGD attributable to the ongoing maintenance. Despite this reduction, a supply of 400 MGD will be sustained.

The Water Board has urged individuals to stockpile water and adopt economical consumption habits. Residents residing within the University of Karachi have communicated that the power supply to their area has been discontinued, precipitating displacement towards available guest accommodations.
