Triumphant Return: South Africa Celebrates World Test Championship Victory
JOHANNESBURG: The South African cricket team was greeted by jubilant scenes at Johannesburg’s primary airport on Wednesday, celebrating their momentous victory in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
Thousands of excited supporters congregated to celebrate the Proteas’ dominant five-wicket triumph over Australia at Lord’s, which brought an end to the nation’s 27-year wait for a significant ICC title.
This victory represents South Africa’s first global trophy since their win at the 1998 ICC Knockout Trophy, now recognized as the Champions Trophy.
Captain Temba Bavuma and head coach Shukri Conrad were the first to appear, proudly displaying the WTC Mace as cheers echoed throughout the terminal.
The players were met with flowers, handshakes, embraces, and autograph requests in a celebratory atmosphere marked by national pride.
In the final, Aiden Markram recovered from a first-innings duck to achieve a superb 136 in the second innings, establishing a firm base for South Africa’s historic victory.
Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada delivered an outstanding performance with the ball, securing nine wickets across both innings and playing a crucial role in the win.
Supporters conveyed deep emotions at the homecoming. One fan, Brian Gabela, a 35-year-old accountant, commented, “I had to be present. These players have overcome numerous obstacles over the years. I felt anxious after we were down by 74 runs, but Markram’s innings altered everything. Now, we stand as world champions.”
South Africa’s next challenge will commence on June 28, as they face Zimbabwe in the first of two Test matches held in Bulawayo. While Bavuma will lead the team, essential players Markram and Rabada will be given rest.
The squad includes five uncapped players, among them the promising Titans duo Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Lesego Senokwane. Pretorius distinguished himself in the recent domestic four-day competition with three centuries and an average of 72.66.
Senokwane also made a significant impact, accumulating 559 runs, including two centuries. Both recently debuted for South Africa A against West Indies A.
Following the Test series, South Africa will participate in a seven-match T20 tournament in Harare, competing against Zimbabwe and New Zealand.
