Warner Reflects on Close Defeat, Urges Team to Rebound
LAHORE: Following a tight five-run loss to Quetta Gladiators in their recent Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 encounter at Gaddafi Stadium on Friday, Karachi Kings’ captain David Warner addressed the team’s performance.
During the post-match press briefing, Warner conveyed his letdown but chose to emphasize the encouraging aspects.
“We need to extract the positives from this situation. I am extremely proud of our bowling unit; they performed admirably. However, in all honesty, our performance wasn’t up to par tonight,” Warner stated.
“I am okay with a loss when we compete until the very end, but surrendering without a fight is unacceptable,” he further commented.
The former Australian legend voiced specific concerns regarding the team’s batting strategy.
“Our batting lacked the necessary determination. It wasn’t about the quality of their bowling; we were simply too relaxed. The pitch was excellent—a score of 141 doesn’t accurately represent its potential. A target of 180 would have been more appropriate. The dew might have also been a contributing factor,” he remarked.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of introspection, adding, “At this moment, it’s crucial to evaluate our current standing. Our victories have been a result of our positive and fearless approach. Tonight, we failed to meet that standard.”
Quetta Gladiators, batting first, were bowled out for 142 in 19.3 overs, owing to disciplined bowling from Karachi Kings. Hasan Ali spearheaded the attack with three wickets, while Mir Hamza and Abbas Afridi each claimed two.
For Quetta, Faheem Ashraf stood out with a rapid 43 off 27 balls, including four boundaries and three sixes. Useful runs from Kusal Mendis (36 off 22) and Hassan Nawaz (35 off 34) aided in setting a respectable target.
In their chase, Karachi Kings scored 137-8 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite a promising start from Tim Seifert (47 off 26) and James Vince (30 off 29), the Kings fell short of the target. Hasan Ali provided late resistance with an unbeaten 24 off 13 balls.
Mohammad Amir, Khurram Shahzad, and Mohammad Wasim Jr. each captured two wickets for the Gladiators, playing pivotal roles in securing the victory.
