Van Dijk Extends Liverpool Stay, Expresses Pride
Liverpool’s defensive mainstay, Virgil Van Dijk, has committed to the club for another two years, as announced on Thursday.
Following in the footsteps of Mohammad Salah, Van Dijk, the experienced Dutch centre-back, has prolonged his stay. With his previous contract nearing expiration, the 33-year-old has chosen to remain at Anfield.
Van Dijk conveyed his excitement upon signing the extension, stating his happiness to continue with the Reds.
“I’m very happy, very proud,” Van Dijk commented following the announcement. “So many emotions obviously that go through my head right now speaking about it.”
Dismissing speculations of a potential move to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Van Dijk affirmed his unwavering commitment to Liverpool.
“It was always Liverpool. That was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan and it was always Liverpool,” Van Dijk reiterated.
“There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family. I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling.”
Since his arrival from Southampton in January 2018 for £75 million, Van Dijk has been a pivotal figure for the club. He has played in 314 matches and was appointed as the team’s captain in 2023.
During his time with Liverpool, he has secured numerous accolades, including the Premier League title, Champions League crown, FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Club World Cup.
