Khawaja Affirms Commitment, Ready to Guide New Opener

BARBADOS: Usman Khawaja has reiterated his dedication to the Australian Test squad, asserting his ongoing value as he prepares to resume his role at the top of the batting order against the West Indies and mentor emerging talent Sam Konstas.

Speaking to journalists in Barbados ahead of the Test, Khawaja voiced confidence in his experience and its importance as Australia transitions into a new phase following David Warner’s retirement.

“I recognize that I’m 38 years old, and people will seek reasons [to doubt]. I still have a significant role, which involves opening, ensuring a firm beginning, and establishing a solid foundation for the team,” he stated.

Reflecting on his established rapport with Warner, developed over 41 shared innings, Khawaja conveyed his aspiration to cultivate a parallel understanding with Konstas, both on and off the field.

“With young Sammy’s arrival, an additional duty falls on me — assisting him in his journey and imparting knowledge. My tenure won’t last indefinitely, so it’s vital to foster stability at the top and support him while I can. He’s still quite young, and it’s exciting to observe his potential,” Khawaja remarked.

Despite inquiries regarding his performance against high-caliber pace attacks — his average against pace bowlers stands at 25.29 since January 2024, slightly below the global opener average of 27.84 — Khawaja defended his track record.

“I struggle to grasp why people suggest I falter against seam when I’ve accumulated numerous runs in Shield cricket and emerged as Australia’s leading scorer in the WTC. As an opener, confronting the new ball is inherent to the role. I’d prefer to face spin more often,” he commented.

The Sydney Test during this year’s Ashes series is frequently mentioned as a potential farewell for Khawaja, yet, in contrast to Warner, he has refrained from setting a definitive retirement date.

“I’m not suggesting a desire to continue for another decade — it revolves around the team’s best interests. I could have concluded my career two years prior, but I recognized my ongoing contribution. Once that shifts, it will be evident to everyone,” he concluded.
